Fire Chief Scott Duffey said no one was hurt in a fire that scorched the outside of a Nevens Circle home Tuesday evening.
Fire fighters were sent to the residential loop off Route 139 around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a fire started by a gas grill at the rear of the two-story home. Duffey said the fire damaged the exterior of the building and extended into the attic, but firefighters were able to stop flames from reaching inside the home.
The chief said a National Grid crew was also called in to shut off gas to the house after the fire reached a natural gas meter. He said most of the fire damage was limited to the exterior of the house, though there was some smoke and water damage in the attic and second floor.
Duffey estimated the cost of the damage at more than $30,000. He said the home is not habitable, and that around six residents have been relocated.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the gas grill sparked the fire, Duffey said.
