NORWELL —

A fire nearly destroyed an empty single-family home on High Street in Norwell.

After receiving several phone calls reporting heavy smoke at 225 High St. about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Norwell firefighters found the three-bedroom home fully engulfed in flames.

The home, which was heavily damaged, was vacant because it was being remodeled, fire Capt. Steven Sweeney said.

The home, which sold for $295,000 in 2006, will likely need to be torn down, Sweeney said.

Rockland, Hanover, Hingham and Scituate fire departments helped fight the two-alarm blaze, while engines from Hull and Cohasset covered the Norwell station.

Sweeney said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but nothing appears suspicious.
